Description of National Park Retezat

Retezat mountains are situated in Meridional Carphathian Mountains, being the highest and stoniest from the range of the mountains among Jiu and Danube Delta. Retezat are constituted by two alpine ridges, almost parallels: one situated to North (30 km long), the highest, dominating with its slopes the northern valleys and Tara Hategului, and the other situated in South (25 km. long), competing in beauty and stately with the Northern. From its height, the ridge dominate the Western valley of the Jiu river and also the Valcan mountain, offering a splendid panorama to Parang and the northern peak of Retezat. Both main ridges are bind, between the Papusa and Custura Peak, through a sharp ridge (2.5 km long) where are raising stately peaks which offer unforgettable horizon tours. Papusa (2508 m), Peleaga (2509 m) and Retezat Peak represents the main touristic objectives which the travelers propose thereself in their trips.

Some of the most spectacular attraction of Retezat are the glacial hollow, the valley full of vegetation and many glacial lakes. A natural reservation named Retezat National Park has been created in 1935 to protect all this beauties - with an area of 20,100 ha with some main points of entrance: Pietrele Chalet, Gura Zlata Chalet, Rotunda, the forest canton Stana de Rau. In the middle of the park a restricted area constitute the scientific reservation with strictly protection (with an area of 1840 ha), which includes Gura Zlata, Radesu, Zanoaga, Judele, Retezat Peak, Gemenele Lake area, Taul Negru, and Dobrun Lake.


Access Ways

  • DN 68 - Caransebes - Hateg to Carnesti, then 34 km. to Moneasa Barrage (asphalt road) and 20 km. to Poiana Pelegii (forest road) - access by microbus;
  • DN 66 - Petrosani - Hateg to Ohaba de sub Piatra - then 13 km. to Nucsoara and 10 km. to Carnic (the mining colony). Over here 1.5h path to Pietrele Chalet.


  • Accommodation possibilities

  • Gura Zlata Chalet - alt. 775m, auto access, asphalt road, from DN 68; Capacity: 120 places in rooms with 2-4 beds and common bedrooms; bar and restaurant; electricity, sanitary, current water;
  • Rotunda Chalet (forest cabin - former chalet of Ceausescu); alt. 1100m, auto access; electricity, sanitary; control point National Park; requires a reservation in due time;


  • Camping possibilities

  • Poiana Pelegii - alt. 1650m, auto access; spring near by and fireplace inside; refuge of the UNESCO Ecological Club "Pro Natura" where it can store up the aids; possibilities to spread the sport activities;


  • Mountain routes

    The proposed itineraries are for one day. Optional longer itineraries could be possible with intermediary camp.

  • Cetatea de Colti and the citadel’s church (restored) - here Jules Verne wrote "The Castle from Carphatians" after he has visited the Citadel;
  • Densus - Saint Nicolae Church, landowner mansion;
  • Pesteana - one of the oldest Romanian wall churches from the South of Transylvania;
  • Hateg - the ethnographic museum; near the town: the Prislop Monastery;
  • Sintamaria - Orlea- orthodox church, mediaeval castle turned now into motel;
  • Hunedoara - Corvinesti Castle, Saint Nicolae orthodox church;
  • Accumulation Lake - Cincis - entertainment area;




  • Variant I (tent accommodation)

    Price of the package: 332 US$/pers, includes: 7 nights accommodation in tent, half board, entrance license in Retezat Reservation, daily mountain trips with specialized guide. The participants will have personal sleeping bag, adequately footwear and clothes. The price is valid for a valid for group of 10 persons
    Deposit: 200 US$/pers, payable to TSE 99 in Canada until May 1st, 1999;
    Balance: 132 US$/pers, payable to Romantic Travel in Romania until 1st July 1999.

    Variant II (chalet accommodation)

    Price of the package: 372 $/pers, includes: 7 nights accommodation in chalet, half board, entrance license in Retezat Reservation, daily mountain trips with specialized guide; The price is valid for a valid for group of 10 persons
    Deposit: 200 US$/pers, payable to TSE 99 in Canada until May 1st, 1999;
    Balance: 172 US$/pers, payable to Romantic Travel in Romania until 1st July 1999.
